BEIJING — Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen says her authorities has requested to buy new fighter jets and tanks from the U.S.
If accepted, the acquisition might set off new tensions between the U.S. and China, which considers Taiwan its personal territory to be annexed by power if mandatory. Talking throughout a go to to Hawaii on Wednesday, Tsai mentioned requests have been submitted for F-16V fighters and M1 tanks.
She mentioned the addition of the brand new weaponry would “vastly improve our land and air capabilities, strengthen navy morale, and present to the world the U.S. dedication to Taiwan’s defence.”
The U.S. is Taiwan’s important provider of defensive weapons, regardless of the shortage of formal diplomatic ties.
Tsai’s unofficial Hawaii go to comes on the finish of a visit to a few of Taiwan’s Pacific Island allies.
