I hereby resign from the place of Secretary of the U.S. Division of Homeland Safety (DHS), efficient April seventh 2019. It has been my nice honor to steer the women and men of the Division as its sixth Secretary. I couldn’t be prouder of and extra humbled by their service, dedication, and dedication to maintain our nation secure from all threats and hazards. I be part of all Individuals in thanking them for his or her sacrifices and people of their households.
For greater than two years of service starting in the course of the Presidential Transition, I’ve labored tirelessly to advance the objectives and missions of the Division. I’m immensely happy with our successes in reworking DHS to maintain tempo with our enemies and adversaries — whether or not it’s in our on-line world or towards rising threats from new applied sciences.
Regardless of our progress in reforming homeland safety for a brand new age, I’ve decided that it’s the proper time for me to step apart. I hope that the following Secretary can have the help of Congress and the courts in fixing the legal guidelines which have impeded our means to completely safe America’s borders and which have contributed to discord in our nation’s discourse. Our nation and the women and men of DHS should have all of the instruments and assets they should execute the mission entrusted to them.
I can say with confidence our homeland is safer right now than after I joined the Administration. Now we have taken unprecedented motion to guard Individuals. Now we have carried out historic efforts to defend our borders, fight unlawful immigration, hinder the influx of medication, and uphold our legal guidelines and values. Now we have responded decisively to record-breaking pure disasters and helped Individuals rebuild. Now we have prevented the disruption of U.S. elections and guarded towards international interference in our democracy. Now we have changed complacency with penalties in our on-line world, we’re holding digital intruders accountable, and we’re stepping up our safety of American networks. Now we have thwarted terrorist plotting towards our homeland and launched new efforts to dam terrorists and criminals from reaching our shores. And we’ve ramped up safety measures to make it tougher for our enemies and adversaries to assault us, whether or not it’s with drones, chemical and organic weapons, or by means of different means.
Thanks once more for the privilege to serve the American individuals and to steer the excellent women and men of the Division of Homeland Safety. Supporting these patriots has been the dignity of a lifetime.
